Writing Campaign Messages

How to write each email and LinkedIn message of a campaign, with AI or as your own template, and what AI writes from.

Written by Anna Ralon

Every email and LinkedIn message in a campaign is written in its step, on the Sequence tab. For each step, AI writes a personal message for every prospect, or you write a template that Overloop fills in with each prospect's details.

Choose how each message is written

Click a message step on the Sequence tab, then choose Personalized by AI or Write your own template. More about testing two versions of a message here.

Personalized by AI

AI writes a different message for each prospect.

What AI writes from

AI writes from the campaign's pitch and writing style. Open them with Settings at the top right of the campaign.

Pitch and Writing style in the campaign settings

Pitch: what AI knows about your offer: your website, a selling description, pain points, benefits, proof points and the campaign's intent. Paste your website address and click Generate to fill it in, then check and edit the fields. The selling description, pain points, benefits and proof points are needed as soon as one step is written by AI.

Writing style: how every AI message of the campaign sounds.

  • Language: English (United States), English (United Kingdom), French, Spanish, German, Dutch or Italian.

  • Formality: Formal, Friendly or Neutral.

  • Tone of voice: Confident, Empathetic, Persuasive, Straightforward or Witty.

  • Length: Short, Medium or Long.

  • Excluded terms: words or phrases AI is told not to use.

New campaigns start with your workspace's default pitch and writing style, set in Settings > AI Settings. Save pitch as account default and Save writing style as account default in a campaign's settings also make them the new defaults.

Writing guidelines

Each AI step has its own writing guidelines, on top of the campaign's writing style.

To change the guidelines, click the pencil next to Writing guidelines:

  • First message: the subject line style (or your own subject), the structure, and an icebreaker about something recent at the prospect's company.

  • Follow-ups: the follow-up style. A follow-up email is sent as a reply to the first one, unless you give it its own subject.

Example messages

Below the guidelines, AI writes example messages for prospects of the campaign, so you can check the result before anything is sent.

Write your own template

You write the message once, with variables (first name, company, and so on) that are replaced by each prospect's details. Click Save to keep your changes.

A first email written as a template

In the toolbar under the message:

  • The braces icon adds a prospect, company, sender, owner or date detail, or one of your custom fields.

  • The signature icon adds or removes the signature. The email goes out with the signature of the mailbox it is sent from, or the sender's name when there is none.

  • The eye icon shows the saved template filled in for a prospect of the campaign.

LinkedIn steps

  • LinkedIn message: written by AI or as a template, like an email, without a subject or signature.

  • LinkedIn connection request: can carry an optional note. Adding a note needs a premium LinkedIn account on the campaign's sender; without one, the request is sent without the note.

When you change the writing settings

Before the campaign is turned on, messages not yet approved or edited are written again with your changes. Overloop asks whether to rewrite the ones you already approved or edited too. Once the campaign has been turned on, your changes apply to the messages written from then on. More about reviewing messages here.
